Susan has designed over 350 productions worldwide for theatre, opera, film, and dance. London: Scenery/Costumes: Salomé (National Theatre); costumes for Buried Child and The Spoils (Trafalgar Studios); Spring Awakening (Novello); Flying Karamazov Brothers’ 4Play (Vaudeville) and August Wilson’s Jitney (National Theatre). UK: Scenery/Costumes: Hamlet (Gate Theatre, Dublin) and The Gabriels: Election Year in the Life of One Family (European tour). Scenery/Costumes/Associate Director: Athol Fugard’s My Children! My Africa! and A Place With the Pigs (National Theatre); Valley Song (Royal Court); Playland (Donmar). Set/Costume designer: Fugard’s Sorrows and Rejoicings (Tricycle). Directorial collaborators include Yaël Farber, Athol Fugard (39 productions), James MacDonald, Tony Kushner, Garry Hynes, Michael Longhurst, Michael Mayer, James Lapine, Robert Falls, Richard Nelson, Garland Wright, Mark Lamos, Frank Galati, Selina Cartmell, Des McAnuff, Bartlett Sher, Doug Wright, Laurie Anderson and David Jones. Recent designs include: La Traviata (Metropolitan Opera); Boesman and Lena (Signature NY); The Oresteia (Shakespeare Theatre DC); Uncle Vanya (Hunter Theater Project, Old Globe); Turn Me Loose (Arena Stage); Present Laughter (Broadway, Tony nomination); Taylor Swift’s Speak Now! world tour and Ringling Bros Circus. Trained at Yale, she chairs Graduate Design at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts. Her many awards include Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards, Australia’s Helpman and Olivier nomination for Wicked.
